-Summary

This article talks about the benefits for ESL students with limited resources. Apps and online resources provide them a fun way to learn, and a way to supplement basic knowledge with an understanding of cultural factors, idioms, and slang. In addition, the use of apps and online resources is cost-effective, convenient, and customizable to fit the ESL student’s individual learning needs. The vast quantity of apps and online resources ensures that there is something for every ESL student.

- Reflection

Technology is becoming more and more important in teaching area because it can bring convenience for both teachers and students. I do agree what is talked about in this article, that online resource and iPad teaching could catch students' interests and provide more learning materials. From my own experience, I used to teach Chinese, iPad teaching brought students a lot of fun when they practiced writing and speaking on the iPads. They built their learning files or PKB, and shared their work with classmates. It was a great fun to motivate students to learn a language.

-Summary

This article talks about how iPads help with children's in different phases of writing including oral rehearsal, aiding the planning of writing, writing models and formative assessment. The author gave some relevant apps as examples to show how students could use them to plan and write. The author get the conclusion that iPads provides a host of ways to improve teaching and learning for writing.

-Reflection

This article especially focus on iPads impact and use in writing. I like the way the author analysis, he break writing into small parts and give an explicit explanation of how iPads could be employed. For example, in oral rehearsal, students could by make films and recording their ideas before they embark on writing a essay. As I have used iPads to teach students to write Chinese essay before. I feel the same way. For students learning another language, it is not easy for them to write a passage. If some useful tools are provided, like making a draft and get feedback from others, is beneficial for writing. As a matter of fact, Pro. Folgeman's using URI teacher knowledge wiki to teach is similar. We could develop our own page and look into other classmates' work to get ideas and also get in time feedback from professor and classmates. It carries the same way with iPads use in writing.

-Summary

In this article, the author talks about his teaching experiences in and out of the ESL classroom. In the classroom, he uses the iPad and apple TV to show video and photos, also he uses games on iPads for students to practice. He then recommend some useful apps he use in and out of the classroom.

- Reflection

It is really good to read articles by teachers about their teaching experience using iPads. He shows more details like how he use iPads in a larger class, what activity he will adopt. He also give pictures and instructions to help readers. This remind me that iPad teaching rely on technology, a teacher should know how to use iPad, apple TV, smartboard, etc. In my former workplace, we have iPads at school, but most teachers never use them, they feel it is not easy and convenient. Only the teacher feel comfortable using iPads, will he try to find more ways to better teach in class. As a result, iPad teaching training is necessary for some teachers.

#4 iPads with special education

-Summary:
This article states that for autistic children, the new iPad is an effective, portable device for teaching communication and social skills. This article talks about the story between mom Rosa and her son Leo. How Rosa found Leo got to be autism and how she found using iPads help Leo to process language and communicate. Rosa wrote all these stories on her blog, and caught attentions by lots of experts. She wrote "Without the iPad and its ability to occupy Leo, the excursion would be near impossible." The author by talking about this story is to say that iPad really helps children with autism.

- Reflection
In this article, McEwen, a assistant professor works with kids with autism, he says "With the iPod, for the first time, he was able to demonstrate that he did understand," As I read this sentence, I could feel McEwen's happiness. I believe through the devices, some of these children have been able to communicate their thoughts to adults for the first time.
These children also tend to process language more slowly than other children, which can cause confusion and anxiety.
If iPad could help them open their mouth, it will help with their learning a language.
Besides autism, I think iPads could help students with behavioral problems show an attitude improvement when given an iPad, because they would feel cool down. I agree that iPads could help kids with special needs learn better especially learning a language. More professional apps and software are in great need.

#5 Is iPads bad for education?

McConville, J. (2012, April 5). Why the iPad is bad for education. ETR-Educational Technology Ramblings. Retrieved from http://www.mcconville.ca/2012/04/why-ipad-is-bad-for-education.html

-Summary

This article talks about why the iPad is bad for education. The author criticize the iPad on its inconvenience in six aspects:

1)They aren’t popular. 2)They are only designed to be a one user device. 3) They promote media consumption not creation. 4) Purchasing Apps is for individuals not schools. 5)They don’t support flash. 6)They are fragile. For ESL learners who most need voice input, the small keyboard would be terrible for them to type. Therefore, writing, blogging and having students create projects would be a worse experience than regular laptops/desktops.

- Reflection

I reviewed a lot of passages talking about the great impact iPads play in Education, when I came to this article, it made me to think more. I realized some inconvenience we met during teaching like transplanting a new app into all iPads. I don't like the small keyboard either, it is not easy if I want to type a longer passage. Also, i ran into some incidences that some students use iPads to take pictures or by other means to make fun of other classmates and post in public. Those bad influences we should also include in ESL education in a community.

Relevance in US

Many US educators are embracing continuous changes in technology and trends in iPads teaching to enrich professional development and students' achievement. In 2013, the Los Angeles Unified School District began carrying out a $50 million plan to equip 30,000 students in 47 schools from kindergarten through 12th grade with an iPad. This is a piece of new to show most of schools in US have iPads now and more and more schools are trying to get each of student an iPad. After spending so much money, some questions are coming up: what role do iPads play in real class? How to evaluate iPad education?

Summary Results
iPads teaching is an assisting methods for school education, it is a mean to help students to better understand what they learned in a fun and relaxing way. Most people have the basic idea towards iPads, which is effective and interesting with tremendous resources to meet needs of all students including students with special needs. iPads teaching a language is carried differently in class depending teacher's interests and technology qualities. However, different voices claim that iPads are overprice, inconvenience which is brought by small keyboards and system flaws as well as technology barrier for teachers.

Overall opinion
As a language teacher teaching Chinese, I agree with that iPads help in learning Chinese. For most Chinese teachers, it is not easy to find proper Chinese textbooks and other resources for students. However, more and more apps are designed for Chinese learning which is beneficial for both teachers and students. They could have access to thousands of textbooks, more than 500,000 free lectures, movies, videos and other native Chinese learning references covering all subjects.Teachers can use some well-made teaching course wares in class to save time. On the other hand, they can integrate all kinds of resources and use certain apps to prepare a better class. Students can be guided by teachers to explore more besides the traditional learning class.
In my Chinese class, some students have strong motivation to learn Chinese, but others easily get bored. Using iPads is a good way to improve students’ interests in learning since students can type, record, watch and make videos and interact with other students. I once used an app named “ask3”, it allows students to make their dialogues and writing in groups or by individual, all works of students would be filed and uploaded in the cloud where other students can watch and make comments. If students know what they are going to learn will be used in their own video, they would be more focused in the class and practice more individually in the dialogues. It is a great way to change students study habits from negative to positive. It also can meet different needs of students of different levels. Advanced students can create better work while students in a low level can do their best to finish what teacher’s requirement. Teachers can explore more apps to help students in practicing Chinese in a fun and creative way.
Language study is not enough in class; students need more time to immerse in a Chinese spoken atmosphere. There are not enough Chinese teachers to monitor and help each student and few parents can help students with Chinese work, so it is important to cultivate students’abilities in self-studying. In class, students can download Chinese books to read. They can use the online dictionary to find the pronunciation and the meaning of new words and answer the comprehension questions of the books. When they are home, they can use certain apps to practice their writing, listening, reading and speaking. They can update their progress so that teachers know what and how they are doing.
However, iPads should be used in a right way, or else, it cost a lot of class time and may not get good results. As a result, it relies on a lot on teachers, this is what I am going to research about.
